With a remote maturing woodland and a requirement for on going forest management, McGowan were contracted by a private landowner to upgrade and further develop the existing access to the woodland.

Working to Forestry Commission Scotland, forest road construction standards McGowan were tasked with constructing a road using on site materials, suitable for use by 44 tonne timber lorries.

In addition a high pressure gas pipeline crossed the route corridor and McGowan had to construct a permanent crossing of reinforced concrete to comply with National Grid specifications for protection works over steel pipelines.

In summary the work included:

  • Upgrading and construction of 1300m of existing and new forest road with associated layby’s, turning areas and drainage
  • Processing 5000 tonnes of on site rock for road construction
